MISS REPRESENTATION

"MISS REPRESENTATION”

SEE LIFE THRU A DIFFERENT LENS

Screening - February 26th 2012 @ 1pm
Plaza Arts Center,
1115 4th Avenue Carrollton, TX 75006

PRESENTED BY A-WOW IGLI 501 (C) (3)
This event is a fundraiser ~ Concession on site.

Back By Popular Demand

A-WOW invites all fathers to spend an afternoon with your daughter. Join a local screening of Miss Representation on February 26th, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Plaza Arts Center, 1115 Ave 4 Carrollton TX. Following the screening will be a panel (all males) and discussion. For ticket info: http://awow-igli-miss-representation.eventbrite.com/

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. Click the link to view the trailer:

Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective. It was selected from the Sundance line-up to be part of the OWN Documentary Film Club.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality--and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made strides in leadership over the past few decades, the U.S. is 90th in the world in terms of women in national legislatures, women hold only 3 % of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have an eating disorder.

Ways to Give Back

VOLUNTEER – Is it something you think about, but rarely get around to doing? Many organizations need special help. Find out what’s available in your community. You can do it alone or recruit friends & family to share the experience.

DONATE – Take the time to purge your home & clean out your closets, drawers and cabinets. What do you own but never use? Bring these items to a local shelter, Goodwill or Salvation Army, particularly clothes & shoes.
With the arrival of 2010, we are all looking ahead at the changes we want to make in our lives and a difference in others. Let’s set the stage for the next decade.

How You Can Help

January 12th's devastating 7.0 earthquake has left the already impoverished country of Haiti in shambles. As of January 18, the death toll has been estimated at nearly 200,000. The devastation has caused the collapse of basic infrastructures like hospitals, schools, and roads. The International Red Cross has said that a third of Haiti's 9 million people may need emergency aid. The US has agreed to relax the adoption rules normally associated with Haitian adoptions allowing the process to speed up dramatically. On January 19, 53 Haitian orphans arrived at a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, airport and were taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where they were greeted by adoptive parents The following is a list of charitable organizations you can contact to help:

Alternative Therapies

Ayurveda for Weight Loss

The Ayurvedic
Ayurveda is what helps us balance our whole physiology. And ayurveda is the ancient healing system of India, the system believes in combining in one meal something called the six tastes. One of its components is the application of the six tastes within the food that we eat. And the six tastes help literally to create balance in our physiology. The six tastes are sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter, and astringent. And all of our food falls into one of those six categories. For example, sweet is any of your grains, pastas, sweet ripe fruits, something like cardamom. Cinnamon, nutmeg, those are all sweet spices. Salty, of course, is salt, or seaweed products, things that come from the ocean. There are some, like cucumber, with a high salt content.

Sour is anything that's citrus, tomato products, anything with acidic or fermented qualities to it. Bitter is usually anything that is of a green or yellow nature, so anything like green and yellow squash. Cilantro — most of these Greek herbs fall into that category. Leeks, things like that are also bitter. And then pungent basically are all the hot spices, or the spicy components that heat up our system. Those are pungent. And then astringent is something like tofu, any beans, legumes. These are very dry and compact into the system. So, in various food, you can actually consume the six tastes within each meal, and feel the effects of that balance after the meal, throughout the day, and in general, in your whole physiology.
